09/12/2009 - Sawston Parish Council to increase SUYFC charges by 32%
Sawston Parish Council has voted to increase the cost of young people playing football in Sawston by 32% in 2010-11. Despite concerns being raised that this increase would potentially make playing football in Sawston untenable the price increase was passed by a majority of the council members.
Sawston United Youth FC has helped to secure £110,000 in funding from The Football Foundation and has directly contributed £2000 of club funds for Sawston Parish Council to build a new pavilion at Spicer's Sports Ground. Once the Parish Council receive this funding they may only increase charges to SUYFC by no more than the annual rate of inflation.
SUYFC feel that both the increase in fees and the timing of this increase contravenes the spirit in which the award of £110,000 to Sawston Parish Council by The Football Foundation was made.
SUYFC is determined to continue to provide the children of Sawston the opportunity to play football for their village football team and despite one councillor's suggestion that if we do not like the increase in price we go somewhere else (Coldham's Common was suggested) to play, we are determined to provide the best coaching and facilities for our players we possibly can and will endeavor to continue to work with Sawston Parish Council to improve the facilities in Sawston.

04/10/2009 - Sawston United Girls Up and Running
Sawston United Girls have begun their first season, the U11s side got off to a great start this weekend with a fine 2-0 win against Haddeham Rovers and the U13 results continue to improve with a very creditable 4-0 defeat against a very experienced Posh Girls side.
We are always on the look out for more players, especially experienced players for the U13 side and any U10s, as we aim to start a younger team up next season. We are a friendly club with a great group of girls and are in the process of applying for FA Charter Standard.
We are very grateful to Aviaries 4U, a local Sawston Company who specialise in pet enclosures for providing both teams brand new kits, which has been a huge help in getting us up and running.

12/07/2009 - United Win Warriors Tournament Again
Sawston United Youth Under 13s won the Whittlesford Warriors tournament for the third year running on Sunday. United won their group to set up a semi-final clash with the hosts and in a repeat of last season's quarter-final Sawston won one nil thanks to an superb finish by ex-Warriors player, Conor Diver.
The final against Needingworth Colts was a tight affair and again a single goal was enough to win the match. Seconds before half time United's captain Max Annetts burst forward only to see his powerful shot parried away by the Needingworth keeper however, Nathan Hardwick followed in to stroke the ball home for the decisive goal and once again win the tournament for Sawston.

23/09/2008 - MLM Sponsor Under 15s
Cambridge Based Consultancy service MLM are proud to sponsor Sawston United Youth U15 for the forthcoming season.
Coach Graham Pearl "We are very grateful for the sponsorship and support MLM have given us. The U15s were formed from scratch last season and it’s been as huge boost to the boys to have a decent strip at last. We struggled last season to get the 13 players required to enter the colts league, but this season we have gone from strength to strength, with 19 players currently signed on. It’s been a mixed start to the season with a win, a draw and a defeat, but once the new players have settled in I’m sure we will continue to improve and the results will follow’’.

28/08/2008 - 30 Years of Youth Football in Sawston
This season we celebrate 30 years of Youth Football in Sawston.
Prior to 1978 many boys from Sawston and the neighbouring villages were travelling to the old Fisons site on the A10 at Harston to play football for Fisons Colts as the village had no youth football team. However, in the 1978/79 season Sawston Enterprises were formed and most of the boys playing for Fisons Colts moved to the new club.
The name Sawston Enterprises came from a company who sponsored the club, and who owned the local chip shop and the shops either side of it. Originally Enterprises played in white shirts, black shorts and white socks, however over the years the club came to wear blue and white.
In 2003 Sawston Enterprises became Sawston United Youth FC and forged links with the senior football club in the village. The club also adopted the senior team's colours and club badge (the village coat of arms). It is now hoped that many of the boys who play for Sawston United Youth FC will go on to play for Sawston United in the future and give the village a successful football club.
Other Football stuff from 78/79......
Bob Paisley won his third league title at Liverpool as his conquering side fought off competition from the likes of Nottingham Forest and West Bromwich Albion to achieve their triumph. The final points tally of 68 was a record under the two points for a win system and Ray Clemence kept 28 clean sheets in a season that saw Liverpool concede only four goals at home. Albion were in their first season under the management of former Cambridge United Manager (Big) Ron Atkinson, and during the season pulled off a famous 5-3 away win over Manchester United. Albion's playing staff included some of the most competent young players in the league, including Bryan Robson, Brendan Batson, Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham.
Down at the other end of the table, the three relegation places went to Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City and Chelsea. QPR had declined since the departure of Dave Sexton in 1977 and were relegated just three years after coming within a whisker of the league title. Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Danny Blanchflower paid for Chelsea's shortcomings by losing his job.
Arsenal won the FA Cup, beating Manchester United 3-2 in a classic final thanks to a last minute Alan Sunderland goal.
The European Cup was won by English champions Nottingham Forest in the final against Malmö FF of Sweden. Forest had defeated defending champions Liverpool in the first round in the first ever all English European Cup tie.
Money dominated the headlines during the season: Trevor Francis became England's first million-pound footballer after joining Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City. Liverpool became one of the first English clubs to have a shirt sponsor when they agreed a sponsorship deal with the Japanese hi-fi manufacturers Hitachi. By the end of the season, more and more English clubs were signing money-spinning sponsorship deals with commercial firms.
